Casting directors (CD's) have a very tough job in that they have to
find the perfect actors or models for each role in a TV show, film,
play, runway show or print campaign out of hundreds, sometimes thousands,
of applicants.
One of the best things an actor or model can do is to put up their own website. This gives you an Internet presence where casting directors can find your headshots or portfolio as well as your profile.
Although having one's headshots or portfolio online can be a great tool to use, casting directors do prefer to look at actual photos. For this reason, you need to have headshots taken of them with their resume preferably printed on the back of each one.
Casting directors also want actors and models to portray themselves accurately and honestly. This means if you are 5' 7", they don't want you trying to squeeze another 2 inches onto your resume. Doing this only angers the CD's because it means they now have someone they've brought in that they can't use.
The other thing that actors and models do which gets under the casting director's skin is sending in old photographs of themselves. If you are 40 years old and use a headshot taken when you were 27, you've grossly misrepresented yourself and won't be right for the part.
Resumes are important too as casting directors look for good training and strong credits. Your breakthrough role should be at the top, not the bottom of your resume. Know what part of your resume to "punch up" to impress others.
When you understand what it is casting directors expect out of you, you stand a much better chance of winning a role over the competition.
