Casting directors have one of the busiest jobs in Hollywood. They watch auditions day in, day out to find the right actors for the parts they're casting. Basically, they are the liaison between the actor's agent and the producer/director.
They send out the "breakdowns," a list of roles the studio is seeking, to all the agents. Agents send back headshots of their clients who might be right for the part. In turn, casting directors go through these headshots and resumes looking for the right person for the part.
After they find people with the right look and experience for each part, auditions are held. The first audition is for the casting directors and whoever else happens to be in the room.
If the actor passes the first audition, the casting director will call that person back in for a second audition. This next audition, the "call back," will have the director and producers present. They are now seriously considering the actor for that part. It's even possible that the casting director will call that actor back in for a third interview if the director and producer want another look.
Casting directors have a very tough job with long hours put in every day, but they look forward to finding that actor who will fill the role perfectly because it makes them look good in the eyes of the producer and director.
